Back in the Game
« on: February 23, 2010, 04:35:29 PM »
So, my current job is with a start up company and doesn't have that much for me to do at the moment, so I've been bored.  And I'm a money hungry bitch, of course.

Soooo.....after applying and interviewing at a few places I would have hated the minute I started, I got hired as a bartender at a sports bar!  Short drive, I wear jeans and whatever sports/alcohol tshirt I want, and there are like 20 TVs so I'll never miss a game.

I start tomorrow, so I'm hoping I like it as much as I think I will.  And, looks like I'll be able to contribute more to this forum now.  :)

Thanks girl!  Two days of training under my belt and I'm really liking it so far.  One more training day and then I'm on the schedule for 5 shifts next week.  At my old job, getting scheduled 3 was a miracle.  So I'm going to have some cash flowing soon which will be nice.

The other places I've worked have been corporate, aka very anal about everything.  This place is nothing like that at all.  They don't care if you keep your cell phone by the computer, they don't care if you keep a soda or whatever behind the bar, that sort of thing.  As long as you're taking care of what you need to, they're happy.  Oh, and not a blender in sight!  I can't wait for it to get warmer and people start wanting frozen drinks and I can just say no.  Plus most of the liquor is on guns.  That makes things soooo much easier on us.

It's just such a far cry from the other places I've worked.  Some people like the more upscale places, but I'm much more the sports bar type of chick.  Hey, it takes all kinds, right?

No stories yet.  There are a ton of regulars, so of course I had the one dude telling me about how special they are and how if I don't make sure their drinks are full I won't last long...you know the type.  Waaaay too much pride in being at a bar constantly.  But I do think for the most part they're just giving me a hard time because I'm new.  Most of them seem to like me though.  Being a chick and knowing enough about sports to talk accurate shit goes a long way.  ;)  However, I work every night this weekend, so I may have a thing or two to share after that...

Oops, I meant this coming weekend.

Had my first "real" shift yesterday.  Pretty dead for most of the day but then got pretty busy for happy hour.  I think I did OK.  It's a bigger bar than I'm used to and a lot more liquors than we had at my old job, but I'm getting it down pretty quickly.  And I was very happy with the money I made.

I open again on Wednesday and then get to get my ass kicked this weekend.  Looks like I went through the training process a lot faster than the other two people they hired, so I hope that means they're confident in me.

My other job is starting to get going too, and I'm training for a skating competition in a few weeks...so I basically went from being bored a week ago to being busy every day this week and beyond.  I forgot what it's like to be busy!

The US Figure Skating Association, the same one that puts on the National Champs that you see on TV, also has an adult division.  And, like the kiddos, they put on a national championship every year.  Which I, perhaps foolishly, decided to enter.

It's being held one suburb over from me this year, so I figured I might as well give it a shot.  I didn't realize that it's actually kind of a big deal and there are apparently over 800 skaters registered.  Now, there are four disciplines (ladies, men, pairs, dance) and five test levels with five age groups, so I'm only going to be competing against 20 skaters or so.

But needless to say, it's a big event so I've officially started panicking.  Especially since I've got a pretty difficult program planned and have yet to skate the whole thing clean.  Oh, and we're not finished choreographing my second program.  And the competition is middle of April.  Yeah, it's sneaking up on my really quickly.

And before you ask, no triple axels here.  With adults it's primarily single jumps but you'll see a few doubles and even some triples in the higher levels.

I will be very happy once it's over with and I can relax.  I'll be really happy if I can medal.  :)
